Thrifting is a huge part of my life.

Electronics, clothes, music, you name it.

Junk stores, auctions, cheap thrift and curated vintage stores, facebook marketplace, and kijiji.

This activity also aligns with my creative practice - I reimagine everyday technologies so that I can come up with new sounds and techniques.

For this release then, I decided to record albums to thrifted 90-minute, Type I tapes. The album will be on the A side of cassette, while the B side will feature...whatever was recorded on them years ago. Radio shows, albums, test tones, interviews, and who else knows? The cover will feature an Instax photo, taken by me, of some piece of equipment used to make this music, placed on a J-card adorned with an old magazine cover (probably a New Yorker).

So by grabbing one of these tapes, you will be getting not only my music but also an artefact of my creative/life practice. As some of these tapes are old, they may be noisy, squeak in operation, and/or feature leftover sounds from whatever I recorded over. This is all part of the experience! Please let me know if you encounter something really wild.

All cassettes come with a digital download through Bandcamp.

I've started with a dozen, beyond that they will be made to order until my supply runs out!

about

This is a collection of tunes and improvisations I did last year in an attempt to develop a post-digital practice involving saxophone, feedback, and tape media.

I borrow the album name, Involution, from the book Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake. This word was recommended by anthropologists Myers and Hustak to best capture the entangled pushing and pulling of "organisms constantly inventing new ways to live with and alongside one another."

I felt like this was a guiding principle for my creative work over the past several years: that I wasn't seeking to use analogue devices to add "effects" to my saxophone but to integrate them, and all their noise and idiosyncrasies, into my setup to develop new techniques and sounds.

All tracks were recorded live off the floor in single takes from a single stereo feed. No overdubbing was used - additional parts in Then Triumph were triggered live from tape loops on the MT-50.

I will have a limited run of cassettes accompanying this release, all of which will be produced on second hand, Type I tapes that I have thrifted.
